Review: Proporta TurboCharger 5000 – External Emergency Charger Battery Pack
Based in Newbury, England and valued at £71.2 billion, Vodafone is the world’s largest mobile phone network company. It operates in 31 countries and has partners in 40 countries. It has nearly 430 million subscribers. The name Vodafone is intended to represent a phonetic amalgam of the words voice, data and phone (fone).
The origins of the company go back to 1982 and Racal Electronics. It was in that year that Racal won a bid for a UK Cellular Network License and as a result established the Racal Telecoms Division and christened its new network ‘Vodafone’.
Three years later in 1985 it launched the network in the UK and it was the first organisation to do so. Famously the first mobile phone call in the UK was made over this network on 1st January 1985 from St Katherine’s Dock in London to the Vodafone HQ in Newbury.
By 1987 Vodafone had become the largest network operator worldwide and the following year it floated on the London Stock Exchange and on Wall Street. Shortly afterwards it formed a joint venture with Cable and Wireless called Packnet.
In 1991 it was decided that the parent company Racal and the network company Vodafone should separate and as a result Vodafone was floated as a separate entity which one year later teamed up with Telecom Finland to provide the first ever GSM roaming network.
In 1993 Vodafone moved into the high Street and began to form a stronger international presence. In 1994 it joined Globalstar to create a satellite mobile system and became the first UK company to merge data, fax and SMS over the digital network. During the decade it also was the first network to introduce PAYG services and per-second billing and signed up its millionth UK customer.
In 2000 it won a 3G license and acquired Mannesmann AG which doubled its size and made it one of the top ten largest companies in the world. A spectacular innovation was the development of Vodafone Live which is a multimedia portal service and which now has over 10 million customers.
