Yesterday Bethesda announced a long-awaited new chapter in the Wolfenstein series on video game news site, Gamespot. Today, they’ve released more information and a more in-depth video of the upcoming title (watch it here, but be forewarned, there’s a lot of telling and very little showing). Also, the developers confirmed that the game will be a single player experience without any multiplayer options. Wolfenstein: The New Order finds you again playing as B.J. Blaskowicz, the hero of the series since Wolfenstein 3D came out in 1992. This new Wolfenstein is set in the 60′s in an alternate reality where the Nazis won World War II. While the setting is different, the First Person Shooter action is sure to be as intense as ever and the Nazi hordes you face look like they’ve received a major technology boost. The trailer shows what appear to be mechs, so get ready for some Nazi Gundam battles! The game is being developed by Machine Games, of Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay fame. Look for the game on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, and next-generation consoles in the fourth quarter of 2013. The fact that there’s no multiplayer is a major bombshell and sure to predispose some folks against the game. I have to say it’s kind of refreshing to see developers devoted to creating rich and cinematic single player experiences. I don’t play online much and I find that many titles sacrifice (or truncate) the single player experience in favor of online multiplayer, be it co-op or death match. But a crop of excellent titles have been bringing back deep single player storytelling, most recently Bioshock Infinite, and I wholeheartedly approve. I seem to be in the minority here, though, so we’ll see how the decision bodes for this latest Wolfenstein!
