A recent Apple press conference revealed that the iOS devices will not be the only ones with an App Store — Macs soon will too. The app store for Mac will function much like it does on the iPhone or iPad, complete with paid and free sorting options, a list of categories, and automatic updates and app installation, and is expected to alter the dynamics of desktop applications. While people will still be able to purchase and download applications through third parties, the ease of the app store is sure to incite some changes in how users take advantage of applications, and will certainly increase the number of apps people choose to invest in. Despite the fact that Apple is being choose-y about who will be able to distribute apps through the app store (e.g. strict limitations for utilities apps), it will still open up a whole new consumer world right from the computer. Furthermore, the Mac App Store will establish a new realm for developers to conquer. What will be most interesting to see is if and how developers create mobile apps with desktop counterparts. While some do exist, such as the recently discussed Mobiola Webcamera , the presence of computer apps should establish an ease of connectivity between OS X and iOS that has not been seen before. Additionally, it will create a whole new way to experience apps — think, being able to use your iPhone as a joystick, or being able to control computer activity from across the room. The possibilities are great, and I can’t wait to see what the App Store brings to the Mac.
