Buying a cell phone as a gift isn’t like giving a sweater or tie. Traditionally, it’s been tough unless the recipient accompanied you to the store, or you were willing to buy a service contract, as well. Most phones are sold at discounted prices in return for signing a two-year service plan. “There’s no question that buying a cell phone as a gift is a more complex challenge,” says Charles Golvin, an analyst at Forrester Research. “You can’t give a phone without a contract, and that’s a pretty big commitment.” In the spirit of happy dialing, we offer some tips for cell phone givers from retailers and wireless companies. One of the easiest options: Buy a gift card. Apple now offers a special “iPhone 3G Gift Card” in any denomination you choose — say, $199, the price of a phone. Or how about $840, average cost of a first-year contract? The iPhone gift card is only available at Apple Stores or Apple’s Web site. The company recommends that anyone with a gift card preregister for their new iPhone online before heading to an Apple Store to complete the transaction. After you type in vital statistics, including a Social Security number and choice of rate plan, an online credit check is performed. If approved, the information is saved to your Apple ID. At the Apple Store, hand your gift card to an Apple representative, who looks up the Apple ID and takes it from there. The representative will set up the phone for calls and e-mail, “customize the home screen, personalize the ring tone and even help load it up with the recipient’s favorite songs and the perfect applications,” says Apple on its Web site.
