Residents of Sin City now have a speedier network. Clearwire Communications said residents of Las Vegas have hit the jackpot with the company’s soon-to-be available WiMAX mobile Internet service. Beginning Aug. 1, the approximately 1.7 million residents of Las Vegas will have wireless Internet access at speeds faster than 3G networks, according to the company. Currently 3G networks provide download speeds of between 1.0 to 1.7 megabits per second, according to Clearwire. Customers of Clearwire, however, will see download speeds of three to six Mbps with some bursts above 10 Mbps, thanks to 4G technology. “Basically, with this launch in Vegas we will cover 638 square miles across the valley,” said Jeremy Abler, general manager of the Las Vegas market for Clearwire. “Residents of Vegas will have an experience they have never experienced before, basically having access everywhere they go.” “In addition to the fact this is great service for residents, it is a great opportunity given the significant tourism in this area,” said Clearwire spokesperson Susan Johnston. “It will give tourists a chance to experience the 4G network.” In addition to monthly rate plans for residents, Clearwire is offering visitors to Vegas a daily pass to access the network for $10. Cashing In On Other Markets Vegas isn’t the first stop for Clearwire’s 4G network build-out. Clearwire announced it will roll out the network to several major metro areas across the nation this year, including Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Philadelphia and Seattle. Clearwire already serves Baltimore, Portland and Atlanta. “In terms of our plans for 2009, we announced plans to cover 80 markets by end of 2010 and we are absolutely on track and on schedule,” Johnston said.
